Have you ever wondered what it’s like to spend a day in someone else’s shoes? After witnessing the musical, comical, and heart-warming live performance of Freaky Friday, you’ll certainly have the best idea possible. Coming to the Orlando REP this spring, Freaky Friday the Musical is a whirlwind show of singing and storytelling, and these are all the details to mark down in advance.
Artistic Adaptation
Based on the book by Mary Rodgers and two Disney film adaptations, Freaky Friday the Musical shares the not-so-classic tale of a mother and daughter who couldn’t be more different. After falling under a supernatural spell, Ellie and her mother Katherine unexpectedly switch bodies with only 24 hours to reverse the magic.
Featuring a book by Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights), music by Tom Kitt (Bring It On), and lyrics by Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), the musical retells Ellie and Katherine’s daylong journey in which they come to truly understand what it’s like to lead each other’s lives. As told from the perspective of both main characters, the musical livens the stage with songs that speak from Ellie and Katherine’s point of view.
Pulling inspiration from multiple source materials, Freaky Friday is nostalgic yet current and relatable. Brought to present day, the musical also intertwines current events, new technology, and recent pop culture to reflect how the story would look in modern life.
Musical Accommodations
Regular performances take place twice daily at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday from April 4 to May 1. To accommodate all audiences, the Orlando REP is also showcasing two special performances: an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter show on May 4 as well as a sensory-friendly performance on April 19.
